By the end of this workshop, you’ll know exactly what to say next time your child gets stuck on a word.

You’ve probably seen this happen

Your child gets stuck on a word.
They pause.
They hesitate.
They look at you.

And in that moment, you’re not quite sure what to say.

So you try to help.
You tell them the word.
You ask them to sound it out.
You say, “Try again.”

But the same words keep coming up.

Reading feels frustrating.
For them. And for you.

If you’ve ever thought, “I want to help, but I don’t know what actually works,” this workshop is for you.

Here’s what most parents aren’t told about reading

Reading isn’t automatic

If you’ve been told "just read more"… you’ve probably felt like something wasn’t adding up.

It has to be taught in a way that actually makes sense.

Guessing doesn’t teach reading

So when your child gets stuck…

and you say things like “Try again” or “sound it out”…

It doesn’t always help them figure out the word.

It’s not your fault

Because they don’t yet have a clear way to break it down.

So they guess… skip… or get stuck again.

This is what we change in the workshop.

Structured Literacy for Parents

A practical, in-person workshop in Taupō for parents of children aged 5–10 who are struggling with reading, guessing words, or getting stuck often.

You won’t leave wondering what to do next. So instead of guessing what might help, you’ll understand what your child needs and how to support them.

This gives you a clear way to help your child when they get stuck.

Hey! I'm Tina.

I’m a teacher and a Certified Structured Literacy and Dyslexia Interventionist.

I work with children who find reading difficult and have dyslexia.

When I first started teaching, I thought I had everything I needed.

But once I was in the classroom, I realised I hadn’t been taught how to teach reading in a way that worked for children who struggle.

The methods I knew didn’t work for them.

I saw children trying hard... but still getting stuck.

That’s what led me to learn more about how reading really works.

Now I use Structured Literacy to help children build essential skills. I also guide parents on how to support their child at home.

This workshop gives you that same clarity.

So you know exactly what to do when your child gets stuck, without guessing or second-guessing yourself.

Why reading practice often doesn’t work

You may have been told to just read more at home.

Or to get your child to sound it out.

Or to practise sight words again and again.

And you’ve probably tried.

Maybe you’ve even bought reading resources for home, hoping something would finally click.

But when your child gets stuck, they still:

- guess the word

- skip it

- or shut down

That’s not because they’re not trying.

And it’s not because you’re doing something wrong.

It’s because they haven’t been shown how to work through words in a clear, simple way.

What actually helps?

Children need to learn how reading works at the word level.

They need simple steps to:

  • Look at the letters
  • Break the word into parts
  • Put it back together

That’s what structured literacy teaches.

What you’ll learn in this workshop

This practical workshop will show you how to support your child with reading in a clear and simple way.

We will focus on:

  • how to guide your child when they get stuck on a word
  • why guessing happens and what to do instead
  • the first 3 foundational syllable types and how they help your child read unfamiliar words
  • how to support reading at home without turning it into a battle
  • a simple routine you can use in just 5–10 minutes a day

You’ll leave knowing exactly what to do the next time your child gets stuck.

This is your chance to finally know what to say the next time your child gets stuck.

Takes 2.5 hours. Simple, practical, and easy to use at home.

You’ll leave with practical tools you can use straight away

So you’re not guessing… you have a clear way to help.
